What Is a Startup Accountant?

A startup accountant specialises in helping new and early-stage businesses manage their UK financial and tax responsibilities. A good startup accountant understands the challenges founders face, including limited cash flow, fast growth, fundraising, and the need to make the right decisions from the start.

Startup accountants use digital tools and cloud accounting software, offer flexible pricing for early-stage businesses, and give proactive advice throughout the year, not just at year-end.

Startup Accounting Services

  • Company formation and business setup
  • PAYE, VAT, and Corporation Tax registrations
  • Annual accounts and Corporation Tax returns filing
  • Director salary and dividend planning
  • Director Self Assessment
  • VAT returns under Making Tax Digital
  • Bookkeeping and FreeAgent cloud accounting software
  • Confirmation statements and Companies House filings

SEIS and EIS for UK Startups

SEIS (Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme) allows very early-stage companies to raise up to £250,000 from investors who receive 50% income tax relief. EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme) is for slightly more established companies, with investors receiving 30% income tax relief on up to £1 million a year (£2 million if the extra is in knowledge-intensive companies).

Companies can ask HMRC for advance assurance that a share issue is likely to qualify before raising investment. It is not a legal requirement, but many investors expect it. Talk to your accountant early if you plan to raise under either scheme.

R&D Tax Credits for Startups

Your startup may qualify for R&D tax relief if it carries out work that aims to advance knowledge or capability in science or technology and faces genuine technical uncertainty. This applies to developing software, creating new products, building new processes, or working with novel materials. You do not need to be a tech company.

Claims are made through your company's Corporation Tax return, and HMRC requires additional information about the project and costs to be submitted before you claim. Your accountant can talk you through whether your work is likely to qualify.

Fixed Pricing, No Hidden Fees

All GoForma packages are priced clearly with no hidden extras and no long-term contracts. Get an instant online quote to see the right package for your startup.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a startup accountant cost in the UK?
Startup accounting packages in the UK vary depending on the level of service. GoForma offers fixed-fee packages that include a dedicated named accountant, FreeAgent accounting software, and your year-end accounts and Corporation Tax return, on a rolling monthly contract with no annual tie-in. Limited company packages start at £28 a month plus VAT, and the Start Bundle with a dedicated accountant is £88 a month, 50% off for the first 3 months. Get an instant online quote to see pricing for your situation.
When do I need to register for VAT as a startup?
You must register for VAT with HMRC when your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period. You can also register voluntarily before this threshold to reclaim VAT on costs or appear more established to clients. GoForma advises startups on the right time to register and which VAT scheme suits their business.
What is the difference between SEIS and EIS?
SEIS (Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme) is for very early-stage companies raising up to £250,000. It gives investors 50% income tax relief on their investment. EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme) is for slightly more established companies and gives investors 30% income tax relief on investments up to £1 million. Advance assurance from HMRC is optional under both schemes, but many investors expect it.
Does my startup qualify for R&D tax relief?
Your startup may qualify for R&D tax relief if it carries out work that aims to advance knowledge or capability in science or technology and faces genuine technical uncertainty. This includes developing software, creating new products, building new processes, or working with novel materials. Talk to your accountant about eligibility before your year end.
Can I switch to GoForma from my current accountant?
Yes. Once you sign up, we contact your current accountant on your behalf to request all relevant information and authorisations.
Do I need to come into your London office?
No. GoForma works with clients across the UK entirely online. You communicate with your accountant by phone, email, or WhatsApp. If you want to use our London address as your registered office, you can do so with the Operate or Grow Bundle without ever needing to visit in person.
What accounting software does GoForma use for startups?
GoForma's primary accounting software is FreeAgent, included at no extra cost with all packages. FreeAgent gives you real-time bank feeds, invoicing, expense tracking, payroll, and live tax estimates in one place. GoForma is a FreeAgent Platinum Partner and also supports Xero and QuickBooks.
How quickly can my startup get started with GoForma?
You can sign up online. Onboarding includes software setup, bank feed connection, authorisation with HMRC, and an introduction to your dedicated accountant. We recommend booking a free consultation first.
What qualifications do GoForma's startup accountants have?
GoForma's accountants are ACCA and AAT qualified. GoForma is also a FreeAgent Platinum Partner. On our Start, Operate and Grow Bundles you have a named, qualified accountant as your primary contact.
Do I need an accountant for my startup?
You are not legally required to hire an accountant when you start a business in the UK. An accountant can help you avoid missed filing deadlines and set up the right structure from the start.
When should a startup get an accountant?
The best time to engage a startup accountant is before you register your company. The decisions made at formation, including business structure, share allocations, VAT registration, and PAYE setup, are much harder and more expensive to correct later. GoForma offers a free 20-minute consultation for founders at any stage.
Is GoForma's London address compliant with HMRC?
GoForma's London business address at 40 Bowling Green Lane, London EC1R 0NE is included with the Operate and Grow Bundles, with digital mail. You can use it as your company's registered office address at Companies House. Your HMRC correspondence address needs to be one where you receive post yourself, such as your home address, because HMRC posts authorisation codes there.
