The Derby business picture
At the Companies House snapshot of 1 September 2026, the Derby post town had 20,818 active companies. In the 12 months to August 2026, 3,462 new companies were incorporated there. That is 166.3 new companies for every 1,000 active ones, well above the UK figure of 137.5, and it ranks Derby 39th of 175 post towns with at least 5,000 companies for the rate of new incorporations, where 1st has the highest rate.
The wider DE postcode area, which covers much of Derbyshire as well as the city, holds 44,010 active companies. It saw 6,244 new companies in the same 12 months, or 141.9 per 1,000.
The Derby post town has 238 accountancy firms registered as companies, which is 87 companies for every firm against 83 for the UK. That puts Derby close to the national average, 71st of the 175 towns, where 1st has the most companies per firm. Across the DE area there are 491 firms and 90 companies for each.
Read these as company figures, not business figures. Sole traders and ordinary partnerships are not on the Companies House register, so a self-employed plumber or a partnership of hairdressers will not appear, and neither will sole practitioner accountants. The counts also leave out registered addresses that hold 1,000 or more companies, such as formation agents, and a registered office is not always where a company trades.
A high rate of new companies means plenty of first-year directors in Derby. The first year is where the avoidable mistakes happen: a missed confirmation statement, director payroll set up late, or VAT registration left until turnover has already passed the threshold. An accountant from the start helps you avoid them.
Industries that stand out
A location quotient compares an area's share of companies in a trade with the UK share, so 1.23 means 1.23 times the UK share. Across the DE postcode area two trades clear 1.15. Letting property comes close at 1.13, and every other trade we track sits at or below the UK share.
Electrical installation (1.23)
There are 641 active electrical installation companies in the DE area. Electricians who work for contractors usually fall under the Construction Industry Scheme. The contractor deducts 20% from payments to a registered subcontractor, or 30% if the subcontractor has not registered, and those deductions count as advance payments towards tax and National Insurance, so they need to be matched against your tax bill at the year-end. A VAT-registered electrician also has to use the VAT domestic reverse charge for most construction services reported within CIS. More on accounting for electricians.
Hairdressing and beauty (1.15)
The DE area has 754 active hairdressing and beauty companies, and 153 of them were incorporated in the 12 months to August 2026. Two tax questions come up again and again in salons. The first is VAT: you must register once taxable turnover in the last 12 months goes over £90,000, and a busy salon can get there quickly. The second is employment status. If you rent chairs to stylists and treat them as self-employed, the working arrangement has to support that, and HMRC's check employment status for tax tool is the starting point. See our page for hairdressers.
Local practicalities for Derby businesses
Business rates
Derby City Council bills business rates in the city, and you apply for small business rate relief on its application form, by post or by email to its business rates team. The relief removes the bill on a sole or main property with a rateable value of £12,000 or less and tapers to nothing at £15,000. Derby says it can be backdated for up to six years if you met the conditions throughout. If you take on a second property on or after 27 November 2025, you keep the relief on your main property for 36 months.
The 2026 revaluation also brought new multipliers from 1 April 2026: 43.2p for most properties with a rateable value under £51,000 and 48p from £51,000 to £499,999, with lower rates for qualifying retail, hospitality and leisure premises. Premises elsewhere in Derbyshire are billed by their own district or borough council.
Taxi and private hire licensing
Derby City Council licenses taxi and private hire drivers, vehicles and operators in the city. The DE area has 177 active taxi operation companies, about the UK share, and drivers who trade as sole traders are not counted at all. Three rules have a direct cost for drivers:
- When you renew a driver licence, or apply for the same type of licence with a different council, you need to complete an HMRC tax check first.
- Since 1 January 2025, newly licensed vehicles must be at least Euro 6, or zero emission capable or ultra low emission, and vehicles over 15 years old are ordinarily refused unless they pass an exceptional condition check.
- From 13 March 2026, only private hire vehicles under nine years old from first registration are considered for a first licence.
Those vehicle rules shape when you replace a car and how you pay for it, which affects your tax. Our page for taxi drivers covers the detail.
Business support
The EMCCA Growth Hub, run by the East Midlands Combined County Authority, gives free, impartial advice to start-ups and growing businesses in Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Derby City Council's own Ascend grants and loans programme for small and medium-sized companies was not accepting new applications in September 2026 while the council reviews its budget, so check its page before you plan around it.
